Simple Places to Find Creative Inspiration
Hello beautiful friends!
As I sit here with a hot cup of espresso, surrounded by skeins of yarn in every imaginable color, I can’t help but feel a wave of inspiration wash over me. It’s a feeling that comes and goes, often sparked by the simplest of things. Today, I want to share with you what’s currently inspiring me. I hope that you’ll feel a little spark of inspiration too, ready to create something beautiful and unique.
1. Heading into Fall
There’s something magical about the changing seasons, isn’t there? Right now, as summer begins to transition into fall, I’m captivated by the rich, warm hues of autumn. Usually, the light begins to change in late August. The haze of humidity begins to fade and everything seems to shine in the crisp sunlight of autumn. The anticipation of fire engine red leaves on my beloved Japanese Maple, crisp air, and cozy sweaters all make me want to create something that captures this beautiful time of year. I’ve been working on a series of autumn-themed scarves and blankets, using deep oranges, reds, and browns. Each stitch feels like a tribute to the beauty of nature. Have you ever noticed how a walk in the park can clear your mind and fill it with new ideas? Next time you’re out, take a moment to really observe the colors and textures around you. You might just find your next project waiting in the rustle of leaves or the pattern of tree bark.
2. Vintage Patterns and Designs
Lately, I’ve been diving into the world of vintage patterns. There’s something so charming and nostalgic about them. They remind me of hearing my Grandmother Graves talk about her childhood in the late 1800’s…a time when everything was handmade with love and care. I’ve been experimenting with some vintage Christmas ornament patterns and incorporating them into modern designs. (Keep an eye on my Etsy shop. They’ll be coming soon!) It’s like blending the best of both worlds. If you haven’t tried working with vintage patterns, I highly recommend it. There’s a treasure trove of inspiration waiting to be discovered in old magazines and pattern books. You can also find vintage patterns on Pinterest, Etsy, and Ravelry! These treasures are a wonderful way to connect with the past and bring a bit of history into your creations.
3. Music
Music is a constant source of inspiration for me. Whether it’s a catchy pop tune or a soothing classical piece, music has a way of influencing my mood and creativity. Recently, I’ve discovered playlists on Spotify and Amazon Music. There are literally playlists for everything…every mood, occasion, vibe, or mindset you’re looking to create. I’ve been listening to a lot of different lists while I work on orders. There’s something about the rhythm and flow that helps me get into the zone. If you haven’t tried it, turn on your favorite playlist the next time you pick up your needles or hook. You might be surprised at how much it enhances your creative process.
Here are just a few I’ve been listening to:
Fall Feels: Autumn Leaves Falling Like Pieces Into Place

Nesting with Grace Cozy Home
Nesting with Grace Sweater Weather
Ultimate Fall Playlist
Fall Vibes
Fall Instrumental - Chill Music for Rainy Autumn Days
4. Stories and Books
Books have always been my escape, my way of traveling to different worlds without leaving my cozy corner. I think my love of books began when I was about 7 or 8 years old. My Aunt Jean gave me a couple of books from a series called “The Famous Five”. They’re books published in the 1940s for kids about the adventures five cousins get into by Enid Blyton. Aunt Jean gave them to me on Christmas Eve and I finished reading both by Christmas morning. Recently, I found the complete set of 21 books in the series and I ordered them just to experience that feeling of getting lost in a thrilling story! Lately, I’ve been inspired by the stories I’ve been reading. Whether it’s a classic novel or a contemporary tale, there’s always something that sparks my imagination. I’ve been thinking about creating a series of book-themed projects, like a “Pride and Prejudice” shawl and a “Harry Potter” blanket. Each piece will be a tribute to the stories that have touched my heart. If you’re a book lover like me, try incorporating your favorite stories into your projects. It’s a wonderful way to combine two passions and create something truly unique.
Some of the books I’ve gotten lost in recently:
The Unmaking of June Farrow
The Collected Regrets of Clover
Strange Sally Diamond

So, thank you for being a part of this wonderful community. Your creativity inspires me every day.
6. Color Palettes
Choosing the color palette is one of the most exciting parts of starting a new project. Colors have such a profound impact on our emotions and creativity. Lately, I’ve been inspired by some unexpected color combinations. For instance, pairing soft pastels with bold, vibrant hues creates a beautiful contrast that adds a modern twist to classic designs. I’ve also been experimenting with monochromatic palettes, where different shades of the same color come together to create a subtle yet striking effect. If you’re looking for a fresh burst of inspiration, try playing around with different color palettes. You might discover a combination that speaks to you in a whole new way. Remember, there are no rules when it comes to color—just follow your heart and let your creativity guide you.
7. Everyday Life
Inspiration often comes from the most unexpected places in our everyday lives. It could be the pattern on your favorite coffee mug, the colors of a sunset, or even the texture of a cozy blanket. I’ve found that keeping an open mind and being present in the moment can lead to some of the most wonderful ideas. For example, a recent trip to the farmer’s market inspired a series of fruit and vegetable-themed amigurumi. The vibrant colors and unique shapes of the produce sparked my creativity in a way I hadn’t anticipated. Try to look at your daily routine with fresh eyes. You might find inspiration in the simplest things, like the arrangement of flowers in your garden or the way sunlight filters through your window. Everyday life is full of little moments of beauty and wonder, just waiting to be transformed into your next project.
8. My Pets, Bob & Daisy
I can’t discuss inspiration without mentioning my beloved pets, Bob and Daisy. Bob, my resilient cat, has been battling lymphoma with such grace and strength. His will to live and his ability to find joy in the smallest things, even on tough days, is truly inspiring. Watching him play with his favorite toy or curl up in a sunny spot reminds me to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. Then there’s Daisy, my sweet dog who came into my life with a severe condition called megaesophagus. She was near death when I adopted her, but her transformation has been nothing short of miraculous. Daisy’s thriving now, and her strong will to live and her boundless energy inspire me every day. Their stories remind me that no matter how tough things get, there’s always hope and a reason to keep going. If you have pets, you know the special kind of inspiration they bring. Their unconditional love and resilience can teach us so much about life and creativity.
I hope this letter has given you a glimpse into what’s currently inspiring me and maybe even sparked a bit of inspiration in you. Remember, inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere. It’s all about keeping an open mind and heart. So, what’s inspiring you today? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
Until next time, happy crafting!
With love and yarn,
Jenny
